A beautiful Saturday, the leaves just starting to turn... and what could be better than being outside canvassing for Ned Lamont? We got up early to meet about 25 other volunteers at the Manchester Town Hall and pick up our assignments. When we returned we were met with sandwiches and then with Ned himself to thank us for our efforts! There is so much going on now and so many elections to keep track of - but for my money, and my time - this is the one that counts the most for the country. Pictured, left to right, is me, Kathyrn_in_MA, Ned, RevDeb and scarecrow.

Ned's Acceptance Speech

This most excellent primary night video from ctblogger includes all of Ned Lamont's acceptance speech and more (watch to the very end for an appearance by our own RevDeb). Al showed us some the footage just after he'd taken it, and I've been waiting impatiently for him to post the video to youtube ever since. Al's promised us a video blogger class - should be great to learn from a master who's spent this year documenting the Lamont vs Lieberman primary race.

Wednesday morning was a bit of a whirlwind, and I had a wicked bad headache. I'd only had 2 glasses of wine at the party, but combined with the lack of sleep, lack of food and waaay too much adrenaline... it felt like my head was going to explode. Checkout was 11am so no sleeping in - although I was tempted until I asked RevDeb how much it would cost for me to keep the room another day. On the way to breakfast at I saw Ned already at work doing an interview in the hotel ballroom, the site of last night's party. Breakfast was at a diner scarecrow had found, then back to the hotel to check out where we met Tom Matzzie and Maxine Waters in the lobby (see photo album).
I wasn't ready to be on the road, so I went to the hotel restaurant for more coffee and then across the street to Lamont campaign HQ where I was given tylenol and a job to do. I spent the rest of the day answering the phone until about 6:30pm when I felt well enough to make the drive home.
Even though the primary has been won, I don't think this was our last trip to CT to volunteer for Ned Lamont. Looks like Joe Lieberman will be representing the "Connecticut for Lieberman" party in the November election... so, see you next time in CT!

I woke up Tuesday morning with a horrible feeling of dread which hung over me all day... In my head I knew the odds were for us - but with so much riding today's results, it was impossible to face the day with any kind of internal equanimity. Not until we heard that the winning results were official, could I start breathing normally again. Ned's acceptance speech was the high point. I just don't have the words to describe how moving it was to hear him give voice to my hopes. This wasn't just a political campaign - this was a referendum on the future of our country. For the first time since September 12, 2001 - I have some realistic hope and faith in my country again.

Exhaustion and excitement combined to prevent me from posting this yesterday. Our day started at 4:30am inorder to get to our assigned polls and set up before they opened at 6am. Spent the morning doing poll presence with Dan from PA, then a late breakfast and then GOTV going door-to-door reminding supporters to vote and offering rides. After a quick break for a late lunch we returned to HQ for our next poll assignments. Spent the late afternoon and evening doing poll presence with Cyndi from VT. At 8pm the polls closed and I was allowed in to watch the vote tallying. Voters at Highland School went 116 to 114 for Ned. Called my numbers in and headed back to HQ to check in for the lastest count... Then across the street for the campaign party.
Note: Never saw any Lieberman supporters - not while at the polls or while doing GOTV. More pictures here.

Today, at campaign headquarters, we met Marshall, who at 90 years is a tireless volunteer for Ned Lamont. scarecrow wanted to know if Marshall had voted for FDR. He told us he thinks must have because he liked FDR and especially liked Eleanor. In 1933 Marshall worked in Independence Missouri at 16 2/3 cents/hour until Eleanor made FDR institute a minimum wage of 25 cents/hour... and that, Marshall told us, is why he is a democrat.
During WW2 Marshall was a B25 pilot, and ever since then he has remained concerned about the well being of GIs. Today he does NOT like what is happening to the GIs, which is why he is putting so much into Ned's campaign.
I guess I won't be complaining about hot it was out canvassing today.

A quick update... Sunday canvassing didn't get started until 1pm, so I caught up on sleep, ate a decent breakfast, drank many cups of coffee and hit the streets with high energy. The weather even cooperated with less heat and humidity (or perhaps I'm getting used to it), so we made good progress. The CT folks have been working months for this and it shows... excellent welcoming organization.
After dinner another meetup at Sullivan's. So many warm enthusiastic people with interesting and inspiring stories... I didn't want to leave... CTKeith's history of the "dump joe" efforts, discussing with Debra what we should do to help the people of the middle east, Gina and TRex's sources of personal and political inspiration... I feel honored and blessed to be in here.

Kathryn of MA got some great pictures this weekend, including this one she calls "gwen ifill and firepups". She leaves us with some of them (see photo album) and this message: "Four of us in MA travelled to CT to GOTV for Ned Lamont, and in the process, we enjoyed wonderful hospitality, and fantastic comraderie." Kathryn, safe travels, we miss you and look forward to your return on Tuesday night for the big celebration we are hoping and working for.

Road Trip!

CT is the place to be, and so scarecrow, Kathryn in MA, RevDeb and I headed south. RevDeb offered me a ride in her air conditioned car - but I was, as usual, late.... and so drove down on my own to Ned Lamont's Meriden office. No doubt I was in the right place, the Kiss-mobile's new friend - the Say-No-to-Joe van was parked outside.
Inside, I met up with other democracy
loving patriots to go door-to-door and otherwise volunteer for the
Ned Lamont campaign. Canvassed for 4 plus hours in 90 degree heat
with Vivian and Bayard, and then back to the office to meet up with
other groups as they came back from canvassing... off to see Ned at
the New Haven Gospel Music Festival. We weren't alone - in addition
to the music lovers we saw Gwen Ifill , who told us that CT was the
place to be... 'course we already knew THAT. Then off Sullivan's
for the evening meet-up. Check out our pics in Saturday's photo album (Jane, Trex, Ned, Ned's parents, Gwen Ifill, and
more). We're here through Wednesday, and will post each day's pics
and events.

Kathryn_in_MA and I spent Sunday afternoon canvassing for Ned Lamont (more pics). This was Kathryn's second Sunday canvassing in the heat of summer and she has over 4 hours in the car to get to CT and back - that's dedication! The Lamont campaign has set up an office in Wilimantic, which is much more convenient for us MA folks. Indeed we met other Lamont volunteers who'd come from MA - and connected to the campaign via the blogosphere! What fun - met a bunch of Lamont supporters, and hopefully helped make a few more.
I signed up for five more days... if you haven't tried it yet, now's the time - it will make you feel the Nedmentum!

The first (only?) Ned Lamont vs. Joe Lieberman debate is tonight at 7pm and RevDeb says it's going to be a classic. We'll be partying at RevDeb's house starting at 6pm. After all, if we're going to be yelling at the television we might as well do it together! So email the roots MA state project to get directions. Meet you there at 6pm. GO NED!!
UPDATE #1: Added a pic (taken by Mr. RevDeb, thanks!) of 5 of us with our laptops, but without Ryan who hadn't yet arrived.
UPDATE #2: Check out Ryan's live blogging of the debate... he was busy typing while I was yelling at Joe (it only looked like I was yelling at the TV).
