A July 13, 2008 investigative report in the British Sunday Times related that Stephen Payne, lobbyist, Bush fundraiser, member of the Homeland Security Advisory Council, whom Bush has known for 20 years was offering to sell meetings with Dick Cheney, Condoleezza Rice, Stephen Hadley, and John Negroponte for between $600,000 and $750,000. The
scam deal was that Payne would contribute a third to Bush’s Presidential Library with the other 2/3 going to his lobbying company Worldwide Strategic Partners. Such “donations” do not have to be reported even if made by foreigners, and there is no limit on their size. In the Clinton Administration, Republicans were aghast that he was renting out the Lincoln bedroom. Somehow I do not expect them to register the same outrage about renting out Bush officials. Call it a wild guess.
As reported on July 15, 2008, Payne was asked to resign from his DHS advisory position.
