297. John Korsmo illegal campaign event

Both John Korsmo, chairman of the Federal Housing Finance Board (an independent regulatory agency) and his wife Michelle Korsmo, deputy chief of staff at Labor, resigned in 2004 as the result of an investigation into an October 2002 fundraising event for North Dakota Republican congressional candidate Rick Clayburgh (He lost). John Krosmo was listed as the “Special Guest” on invitations which were sent to the presidents of the 12 banks the Federal Housing Finance Board regulates. In April 2005, John Korsmo pled guilty to making false statements to a Senate committee and the agency’s Inspector General about his and wife’s role in the event. In July 2005, he was sentenced to 18 months probation and a $5,000 fine.
